Lack of proficiency in English Language is the single biggest barrier holding deaf from higher education, access to and growth in high quality jobs they aspire for.

Based on feedback from deaf students, job seekers and teacher of schools for deaf students, v-shesh has developed a English language learning programme customised for deaf students. Starting with Mumbai, this programme has been expended to cover schools in Chennai, NCR/ Delhi, Rural Tamil Nadu, Semi-urban Karnataka. The programme has recently been expanded to cover schools and trainers in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

vEnglish programme uses deaf-learner centric methodology, visually rich content and innovative techniques that are delivered by a combination of deaf and hearing trainers. Designed by a team of deaf and hearing trainers, vEnglish is a modular programme that starts with vocabulary and progresses to advanced grammar. 4 key design elements that make the programme engaging for deaf students are:

  1. Interactive sessions that include activity based learning
  2. Substantial usage of visual aids
  3. Exposure to reading and writing
  4. Usage of PVR Methodology (Preview-View-Review)

Deaf students have responded particularly well to PVR methodology that involves:

  1. Preview: Sign and explain story to students. Explain meaning of difficult words
  2. View: Students read the story (line by line) using given grammatical sequences
  3. Review: Revision of the story to see if the candidate has understood the meaning. Explain the concept with reference to the story
